Test Automation with OpenText Functional Testing (UFT One)
Functional and regression testing in a prepared learning environment
Create and review automated functional tests using OpenText Functional Testing, with data-driven techniques and integration overviews.
Why this course
This two-day course introduces practical automated testing using OpenText Functional Testing, known in earlier releases as UFT One. It combines test creation and execution with object repositories, scripting, data-driven tests, synchronisation, reusable functions and result analysis.
Participants develop selected tests against a prepared sample application. Keyword-driven frameworks, CI/test-management integrations and mobile testing are introduced through small examples or demonstrations. Browser, application, operating-system and integration support depend on the chosen product release, installed add-ins and available licences.
Learning outcomes
The course teaches participants to:
- Explain the role and limitations of functional test automation.
- Create, execute and inspect a selected automated test.
- Use object repositories, checkpoints, synchronisation and data-driven techniques.
- Apply basic VBScript and reusable functions to a sample test.
- Describe keyword-driven organisation and supported CI/test-management integration patterns.
- Analyse test results and investigate selected failures.
Prerequisites
- Basic software-testing principles.
- Familiarity with programming concepts; VBScript knowledge is useful for the source-based scripting exercises.
- Understanding of web or desktop applications.
- A prepared, licensed learning installation on a supported Windows environment with appropriate add-ins and a sample application.
- Check the chosen release's support matrix before class; mobile lab integrations may require separate access and resources.
2 modules
01Day 1 — Creating and Structuring Automated Tests1 topics
Module 1 — Product and Environment Overview
- Introduction to Test Automation
- Capabilities and limitations of OpenText Functional Testing (formerly UFT One).
- Review the prepared installation, selected release, licences and required add-ins.
Module 2 — First Test and Results

02Day 2 — Regression, Reuse and Integration1 topics
Module 4 — Functional and Regression Design
- Designing Functional Tests
- Implementing Regression Testing Strategies
- Handling Dynamic Objects and Data
Module 5 — Keyword-Driven and Reusable Tests
- Concept and Implementation
- Build a small keyword-driven example rather than a complete enterprise framework.
- Review maintainability and appropriate reuse in keyword-driven tests.
- Error Handling and Debugging
- Custom Functions and Reusability
- Investigate test execution time, synchronisation and unnecessary repetition.
Module 6 — Integration and Platform Considerations
- Overview or prepared demonstration of a supported CI integration.
- Test-management integration concepts and access requirements.
- Browser/platform coverage must match the selected version, add-ins and support matrix; the main test-authoring environment is Windows.
- Mobile testing overview with the relevant Functional Testing Lab integration and support requirements.
Module 7 — Reporting and Review
- Understanding Test Reports
- Analyzing Test Runs
- Review available reporting options and a selected custom-report example.
- Review the selected test flow and explain failures, evidence and maintenance decisions.
- Summarise next steps and remaining environment or integration work.
