Starting Java for Experienced Programmers

A one-day transition through JShell, core syntax and small applications

Introduction

Why this course

Transfer existing programming knowledge to Java through short demonstrations and guided exercises. Explore the Java ecosystem, prototype with JShell, use an IDE and build a small application. The course provides a starting point for specialised Java training rather than complete application, mobile, web or streaming development.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes

  • Explain Java uses and compatibility considerations when selecting a JDK and framework.
  • Prototype core Java syntax in JShell and use a suitable IDE.
  • Apply methods and object-oriented concepts in guided examples.
  • Compile and run a small program with file I/O and external libraries.
  • Identify further training needed for specialised platforms.
Prerequisites

Prerequisites

Current programming experience in another language, familiarity with OOP and file systems, basic server concepts and high-school mathematics. A compatible JDK/IDE environment on Windows, macOS or Linux, or authorised remote access, plus internet and English-language technical reading. No ECMA-specific language or unrestricted root access is required.

Training outline

3 modules

·
01Module 1 — Java ecosystem and core syntax7 topics
  • Overview of Java
  • Understand what different versions and forms of java are for:
    • Java for application development
    • Java for mobile app development
    • Java for Web Application development
    • Java as an integration tool
  • Coding principles
    • Flow
    • Logic
    • Memory
  • Coding in JShell
  • Operators
  • Conditions
  • Loops

Select a supported JDK compatible with the chosen framework and lab. Different application areas use different tooling; a one-day introduction does not qualify learners for all of them.

02Module 2 — Methods, tooling and object orientation6 topics
  • Methods
    • Creation
    • Reusability
    • Arguments
    • Expressions
  • Compiling
  • Deployment
  • IDE
    • Eclipse
    • IntelliJ
    • How to choose
  • Integration
  • Apply Java object-oriented concepts

Use one selected IDE; Eclipse and IntelliJ are comparison examples.

03Module 3 — Small application practice5 topics
  • I/O
  • OOP implementations
  • File I/O
  • External Connectivity
  • Assessment

Compile and run the course example, add a selected external library and review basic connectivity. Deployment is a small guided example, not independent production readiness.
