Oracle ADF Migration: 10g Applications to 12c
A staged migration workshop for legacy application developers
Plan and practise a release-specific migration of a small legacy ADF application, with model, view, security and regression checks.
Why this course
This five-day workshop focuses on legacy Oracle ADF application migration toward an agreed 12c target. The source’s “12G” wording has been corrected to Oracle’s 12c terminology. This is a legacy-target course: Oracle documentation now lists newer ADF releases, so 12c is not presented as the latest platform.
Participants work on a prepared sample and review the source release, component libraries, JDeveloper, runtime and database compatibility before migration. The route may require intermediate upgrades and manual changes; the course does not promise direct conversion of every 10g application or completion of a production migration in five days.
The workshop preserves a baseline, records changes and tests model, UI and security behaviour in an isolated training environment.
Learning outcomes
The course teaches participants to:
- Inventory a legacy ADF application and identify release/component dependencies.
- Check the applicable migration path and prepare compatible training environments.
- Migrate selected business-component and data-source examples with validation.
- Review Faces/UI changes and required Java or configuration adjustments.
- Compare roles, policies and expected access before and after migration.
- Create and run a small regression-test plan and diagnose selected failures.
- Document remaining work, deployment checks and a reviewed recovery approach.
Prerequisites
- Proficient in Oracle ADF 10G development.
Basic knowledge of the agreed Oracle ADF 12c target and its release-specific documentation.
- Familiarity with Oracle databases and Java programming.
- Knowledge of version control systems like Git is beneficial.
An authorised prepared sample application, disposable database and matched JDeveloper/ADF/runtime environments. Establish source and target subversions, any necessary intermediate route, software access and licensing before hands-on delivery.
5 modules
01Day 1 — Scope, Migration Path and Environment1 topics
Morning
- Compare the source application with the selected ADF 12c target; identify components, APIs and behaviour changes.
- Inventory and baseline; check official migration/support matrices, intermediate steps, compatibility and a rollback approach.
Afternoon
- Set up matched JDeveloper, ADF runtime, Java and database versions for the selected 12c training target.
- Import a copy of the prepared application using the documented release-specific path; inspect automated changes and remaining issues.
02Day 2 — Model Layer1 topics
Morning
- Migrating ADF Business Components
- Data Sources and Connection Pools
Afternoon
- Review selected model-layer differences relevant to the sample rather than every advanced 12c feature.
- Migrate selected model components, validate database access and compare behaviour with the baseline.
03Day 3 — View Layer1 topics
Morning
- Review ADF Faces/component migration requirements; automated conversion may need manual UI and Java changes.
- Selected view-layer differences in the agreed 12c target.
Afternoon
- Java Code Adjustments in the View Layer
- Practical Exercise: Migrating and Testing the View Layer
04Day 4 — Security and Selected Features1 topics
Morning
- Security Migration: User Roles, Policies, and Constraints
- Review security behaviour and configuration differences relevant to the selected source/target releases.
Afternoon
- Selected optional features or add-ons supported by the agreed environment; no universal compatibility assumption.
- Migrate and test sample roles/policies and one selected feature; verify both permitted and denied access.
05Day 5 — Regression, Debugging and Deployment Review1 topics
Morning
- Unit Testing and Integration Testing Strategies
- Debug selected ADF 12c migration failures using logs, configuration and regression evidence.
Afternoon
- Review packaging, matched runtime dependencies, acceptance criteria and deployment/recovery steps; no production deployment is performed.
- Run the sample regression checks, document unresolved issues and compare the migrated application with the saved baseline.
