Introduction to the Digital Revolution

Data, AI, blockchain and digital-finance awareness

Introduction

Why this course

A one-day overview of the transition from industrial and analogue systems to digital technologies. Explore introductory data, AI, blockchain and digital-banking concepts through examples and discussion.

The aim is informed awareness rather than implementation expertise or prediction of the future. Participants compare use cases, limitations and risks without assuming that every new technology is necessary or beneficial.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes

  • Describe broad industrial, analogue and digital developments.
  • Distinguish databases, big-data work and data science at an introductory level.
  • Explain how machine learning, neural networks and reinforcement learning relate to AI.
  • Distinguish blockchain, cryptocurrency and NFTs and identify common misconceptions.
  • Discuss digital-banking/fintech developments as evidence-led scenarios rather than guaranteed outcomes.
Prerequisites

Prerequisites

No programming background is required. Familiarity with everyday digital services is helpful.

Training outline

5 modules

·
011. From Industrialisation to Digital Systems4 topics
  • History
  • Industrialization
  • Analogue Era
  • Digital Era

Use selected examples rather than a deterministic claim about where technology must lead.

022. Data and Its Uses4 topics
  • Explorations
  • Database
  • Big Data
  • Data Science

Compare storage, analysis and modelling; data quality and context limit the conclusions that can be drawn.

033. AI and Learning Systems4 topics
  • Machine Learning
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Reinforcement Learning
  • Neural Networks

Distinguish AI from particular learning techniques; discuss introductory capabilities, error, bias and human review rather than human-like understanding or assured predictions.

044. Blockchain and Digital Assets4 topics
  • Blockchain
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Non-fungible tokens (NFTs)
  • Distributed ledgers compared with conventional databases

Compare a distributed ledger with a conventional database. A token or NFT does not by itself establish legal ownership, value or a sound investment; ledger integrity does not make every recorded claim true.

055. Digital Banking and Future Scenarios3 topics
  • Industry4.0 as wider context
  • Fintech
  • Possible future banking scenarios and uncertainties

Discuss service accessibility, data/security concerns and regulation. Compare plausible scenarios and identify what evidence would be needed to assess them.
