Why this course
Claris FileMaker brings data, screens and workflow automation together in a platform for building custom business applications. Understanding how these parts fit together helps participants move from storing information to creating an application that people can use and share.
This practical foundation course follows a straightforward path: build a simple application in FileMaker Pro on a Windows or Mac desktop, then deploy it through FileMaker Server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Participants learn to organise data, design usable layouts, automate a small task and control access before making their application available to remote users. The hosting component uses a self-managed Ubuntu server, which can run on-premises or on a cloud virtual machine.
Training uses active trials, with the installers and FileMaker Server trial access arranged before the course. Practical work centres on one small application and a single-server deployment within one day, supported by the required hands-on Ubuntu administration experience.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish the roles of FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Server and FileMaker Cloud.
- Create a simple database with tables, fields and a relationship.
- Design layouts for entering, finding and viewing records.
- Add a simple calculation, script and user access controls.
- Install FileMaker Server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and upload an application.
- Verify remote access and configure a basic backup schedule.
Prerequisites
- A laptop running a Claris-supported Windows or macOS version, with a supported browser and an SSH client.
- Hands-on Ubuntu administration skills: SSH, sudo, package installation, service management and firewall rules.
- Access to a dedicated Ubuntu 24.04 LTS training server meeting Claris’s system requirements, with sudo privileges.
- Active FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Server trials, with installers and Server trial access arranged before training.
- Unrestricted internet access.
- Ability to establish SSH connections to remote training servers at public IP addresses, with outbound SSH permitted by the device and network.
